Relational architecture

Relational architecture is arguably the most important part of an organisation’s operating model. Outside of the formal hierarchy of an organisation are the networks of informal relationships that underpin work and how it is done.

But how do organisations help people navigate these relationships? My feeling is they are the most important part of work and of enjoying what you do. Poor relationships with colleagues can undermine the whole experience.

The Centre for Creative Leadership recently published a guide for leaders on how to strengthen relationships. The report, The space between people: building the human connections that make leadership work at scale, focuses on leaders but there are useful insights here for anyone interested in developing better relationships at work.

For example, behaviours to develop include making space through powerful questions, connecting across boundaries, giving and receiving feedback, active listening and trust building.

The report talks a lot about relational capability – something I don’t see talked about so much in workplace reports.
